The summer is over, the honey has been harvested and now the bees have to prepare themselves for winter. For the beekeeper that means checking that they have enough stores (food) to keep them going and applying any treatment required for Varroa, the parasitical mite that now affects all bee colonies in the UK. Having had most of their honey taken at the end of summer, bees can starve over the winter months if the beekeeper doesn’t keep an eye of them and feed either syrup or fondant when necessary. And dont leave that too late. Starving bees can be too weak to get food a few inches above their heads.
